Nick was compelled to protect & learn what the keys would unlock, he was compelled to obtain the Grimm books. He wasn’t compelled to actively join an organization with a specific agenda against a specific group of Wesen. His idea of protecting his son was putting him & Adalind in a makeshift fortress in a less populated area. He protected the stick & expanded tunnels from Adalind, but never worried about his son being with Adalind fifteen plus hours a day without contact and knowing where they were or with whom. Suspecting Renard was working with BC, he didn’t even ask Adalind if she’d allowed Renard access to Kelly.
I agree Nick isn’t the brightest bulb, but don’t necessarily think higher intelligence or street smarts is the issue. Nick’s behavior, thinking process, and prioritizing are driven by his Grimm. Combine Nick’s immaturity with Grimm impulse and things might be even more chaotic.
