Marie giving up her engagement to raise nick is what seems to be what the show implies. Even though it does not directly say so. But exactly why could she have not got married and still taken care of Nick. Farley was marring a Grimm so Nick possibly being a Grimm would not be a reason. Yes Farley might not have been willing to take responsibility to Marie sisters kid.
I am thinking the writers did not tell us because they also could not come up with a good reason. So making it an ambiguous reason of taking care of Nick satisfied most people.
The writers could have used Marie not wanting Nick near the wesen world hoping he would not become a Grimm. But that means if she had of got married she had planned to not associate with the family.
I think the show could have simple stated that the wesen community expressed to many objection to a Grimm being with a Wesen. Just like they used the community beliefs to justify the wesenrein objection to Monroe and Rosalee and Monroe working with Nick.
