There are still places where there it is possible to get your gas pumped, you usually have to pay a higher price. They cater to older people, the disabled, people who don't to get their hands dirty or smelly, or touch places where other people have left germs.

My friend lives in NJ and the first time she went out of state for work, she said she waited almost 10 minutes at gas station waiting for an attendant to pump her gas. The guy thought she was insane when she asked for help.

It's interesting to note that WA to the north of us and CA to the south of us both have self-service gas, and gas prices in both states are significantly higher than they are here. So if there's an upside to pumping your own gas, I'm not seeing it.
