And from what I understand, you are right about how detectives work; they make most of their arrests during interrogations inside police facilities, with arrest warrants that require going out to get the subject carried out by uniformed officers.
So, yes, Nick and Hank definitely have their high number of violent encounters primarily because they are TV cops, rather than because Nick is a grimm.
