I think what is at issue is the difference in either cultural mores or what is perceived as the societal mores.

Consider this. If Nick was a pedophile and was shown as having a loving and nurturing relationship with an eleven year old girl how would you react? Or if Nick actually owned a slave and took sexual liberties with his property how would you react?
By the way, both scenarios are not over the top examples, they exist in the world today.
It is simply a matter of cultural mores and enforcing them and it is relevant in that context.
In the U.S. porn producers are no longer allowed to have of age adult actors or actresses portray and underage person who engages in sexual behavior. The logic is, it will normalize the behavior. So it goes beyond academic theory and is instantiated in law.
