He really only referred to the diaries when he had to and the rest of the time relied upon Rosalee and Monroe to be his literary eyes and ears. Sad really because I think it would have made for a much more well rounded character.
Nick was actually more well rounded because of Monroe and Rosalee. Early on, Nick went to Monroe for more information after first identifying a wesen from the books, because the books had a very narrow purpose (how to identify wesen, how to kill wesen). Monroe and Rosaleee were his source of information on what wesen were thinking and how he could predict what they would do. And on some occasions, how to resolve a wesen issue without having to kill the wesen.
To you he's more rounded. Having Monroe around to pull Nick out of might be situations is all right. But for me, Nick would have seemed much more of a grimm if he's have taken it upon himself to do some above and beyond research instead of his usual brute force. For instance, in doing research for no particular reason other than to learn, he might have found another way to incapacitate a criminal wesen instead of deadly force. Doing his own research and coming up with his own solutions would show Nick to be the different kind of grimm the series intended.
The best way to frustrate a cyberbully is to ignore him.
