Hitler’s slaughter of millions was preceded by Stalin’s slaughter of millions. In fact I believe that one can make a strong argument that Stalin would have continued his slaughter if Hitler had not started his quest to dominate the world. Who is to say that Stalin, left unchecked by Hitler, would not have been responsible for significantly more carnage than the two combined? In addition to this dynamic, what about the other world leaders? What about Japan and the terrible slaughter perpetrated by the Japanese in Nanjing and many other places? What if one of the secondary men of evil under Hitler had taken up his mantle? Can you imagine the outcome of a Germany led by Joseph Goebbels?
Hitler perpetrated unspeakable evil as a player in the times and those times were set in motion by people doing bad thing long before he was a player. I think that the stage was set, for Hitler, by world events that were placed in motion during World War One.
What if we asked about the benefits of Woodrow Wilson accepting the surrender of Germany instead of using political events to enter into the war? What if Wilson had chosen to end World War one, save hundreds of thousands of lives lost to that war during and after Germany’s attempts to surrender to a neutral third party? What if Wilson helped to set Europe of the path of peace and prosperity instead or economic ruin, famine and war? What if Wilson had not gone to war and kept the Influenza outbreak small, local and isolated in the United States instead of spreading it around the world, killing millions of people? Stalin killed as many as 10M people before World War two. Hitler killed as many as 12M during World War Two, Japan killed something around 2M during World War two, but Woodrow Wilson sent Influenza around the world during World War One killing tens of millions.
We can see that the question of correcting a time line is not as simple as the question presupposes. Is killing baby Hitler even the right step to take if one wants to stop the slaughter of million? Would eliminating Stalin, eliminating the military leadership in Japan, or perhaps the elimination of Wilson give us the answer that the question begs? Or would a time traveler set into motion a whole new chain of events leading to more significant humanitarian catastrophe? Should we just pay attention to those men of evil that history paints as evil, or should we pay attention to all men of evil independent of histories white washing? Then if we choose the ladder, who gets to decide where lines are drawn?
