Exactly. So why be so foolish as to let the staff drag him back to what he believed was the other side when he could have just let it go? The staff would have done no more damage to anyone and it would have been safe from anyone who might have had designs on using it for their own power.
If Nick just let go of the staff he would have no way of reviving his friends, before that portal opened up out of nowhere the only way shown to bring back the dead was reviving them with that staff, so obviously he needed the staff or else his friends would be permanently dead. Trubel was clear evidence that the staff could rivive the dead, Nick even tells Trubel if the staff worked for her it would work for them.
If Nick just gives up letting go of the staff, he’s essentially allowing his only of hope of seeing his friends again go along with the staff. Just giving up and allowing that hope to be gone leaving his friends gone forever would be totally out of character for Nick.
