According to everyone here, the staff responds to Nick's desires. All he should have to do is just think about letting it go, right?
Why would he let go of it he lets go of it his friends have zero chance of being brought back to life like trubel did, Also in the few seconds it took to be dragged through the portal I doubt he had time to think about anything.

If he'd actually planned on the staff opening up a time vortex and sucking him in, sure. But he he thought he was going to somehow poke his dead friends with the staff and bring them back to life the same way the stick had saved him and the way he had seen Z bring Trubel back. If he'd wanted a portal, he'd probably have asked where the nearest mirror was, because that's the only way he'd seen it done so far.
