Nick removes the ring from Adalind's finger and throws it away. Diana comes out of the cabin and asks him where the other Grimms are. Then Nick says, "Oh my god, I can bring them all back," and as he reaches for the staff tells Trubel, "If it worked for you, it can work for them."
So Nick didn't actually think of trying to use the staff to bring the dead folks back until after he removed Adalind's ring.
No idea why the vortex was made of Z's remains, but that would be enough to make me not want to go in there or let go of the staff, in case it was Z trying to make a return from the dead and a grab for the staff.
IMO, that whole remains into vortex sequence contradicts the writers cop-out by explaining it as a reset. A reset is time travel and in Grimm, there was no time travel.
You know you are OLD, when you see the Slide Ruler you used in college selling in an ANTIQUE SHOP!!
