I suspect that the realtionship between everybody dying, the appearance of Kelly and Marie and that "inner strength" business was that Nick had to be at the end of his rope for it all to come together.
Yea, they kept that possibility open to the end. I guess your point about Nick at the end of his rope is the short version of what I've tried say in all those long posts.

The reason I’m saying the writers are agreeing with me, is because I based my arguments on what they have been saying. Do you expect me to ignore that information?
I will give you a parallel example: In the Harry Potter universe, J.K. Rowling have been giving the fans a lot of addition information that is not in the books. Any material she has written or was involved in or has stated is the highest level of canon in that universe. So why should not the writer’s staments be canon, even if they did not find time to include that in the episode?
My question to you is this; because you feel interviews are important, why do you feel that should be enforced on everyone else?
One should always base opinions and arguments on all available information. This was their thinking behind the scene, so it explains why it happened. And I also think it was obvious based on what happened in the episode. They did not need to exclude more important things to explain this, because the course of events spoke for themselves.
I’m not enforcing anything, I’m only supplying the basis for my arguments. I think it’s interesting for people who read this to understand the logic behind ones thinking. If you think Nick going after Eve was stupid, that’s ok with me, I’m only making the case for why the actual storyline made sense.
It was probably a joke, but according to an interview, the writers considered a storyline where the stick was connected to aliens. I wonder what we had argued about if that had happened.
