Maybe, here is another thought. Fatherhood effects some guys strongly and they discover feelings they never knew they had and react is unexpected ways, sometimes explosively so.
My current interpretation of Nick is he either suffers form Asperger Syndrome or has some other sort of emotional disorder that prevents him form relating to people in a normal fashion, yet he is high functioning.
I would have handled the Juliette rejection differently than Nick, but I can fully appreciate the surge of emotions and the stern protective disposition he displayed when he realized his child was being threatened.
I know when my bitch told me she was carrying my seed I was the most overprotective, cantankerous a-hole you could imagine. And now 20 some years later I still am. She bore my child, you get near her and I'll rip your head off, and look at my offspring sideways and you will not like the result.
There is just something about the institution of motherhood and children that effects some men powerfully.
For Nick, an orphan, possibly emotionally damaged or emotionally impaired I think an aggressive stance to protect his seed seems somehow normal.

...It is this unrealistic guilt that drives your stated statistic, and why I say religious repressive think is damaging to a society.
LOL, you need to tell my Catholic, Amish and Mormon buddies that one, they appreciate a good laugh. Maybe your point applies to some religions but I have not noticed any Catholics, Southern Baptists, Mormons, Amish, or Muslims who have this hangup you speak of. Sex outside of marriage yes, they have issues with that, but most of my buddies of faith who are married are going to get buried with one heck of a smile on their face.
Oxford commas are so totally rad!.
