If we're going to get into the ethical question of who was the "rightful" owner of the spoils of Constantinople, then that would be whoever the knights stole it from in Constantinople (unless it turns out they they stole it too, in which case FIIK). Otherwise, we're talking about the Middle Ages, where might made right. In that case, I would argue that the grimms became the "rightful" owners by virtue of the fact that in 800 years the royals, with all their power, failed to take possession of either the keys or what they led to.
IMO it was always a given that the seven families were failures. Because in the modern world there are still 11 monarchies that have managed to retain some of their power and most of their privilege by adapting to change. The mere fact that the seven families were cast out of power and reduced to titles and grandiose dreams of comebacks through the use of thugs and corruption is proof of this.
Nick managed to come out on top of most of his royal encounters, but not his last one where he was unable to prevent Freddie from escaping Portland with Diana (plus losing his mother to Kenneth). Freddie was ultimately taken down by an alliance between Viktor, the resistance and presumably HW. So ultimately Freddie's downfall was indeed at the hands of someone else.
