Kelly told Nick that the seven grimms believed that whatever they buried could enable whoever got hold of it to control the world. Renard gave him the details on the various legends about what it was, and concluded his explanation by saying "can we afford not to believe it?"
For 800 years, the grimm families acted on their belief that preventing the seven keys from falling into the hands of the royals would protect the hidden mcguffin. But in Nick's time it was possible for Monroe, who was hardly an expert treasure hunter, to narrow down the region from a single key, and in addition to the royals there was now BC to contend with. And he wasn't so sure about HW, either. So maybe continuing to focus on keys and leaving the mcguffin where it was no longer seemed like such a foolproof way to keep it out of the wrong hands anymore.
