Does any sane person consider the Nazis to be good guys? Or perhaps the Mongolian Horde? These were not good people out to better the world. Their intention was to conquer it for their own benefit and to damned bad for the losers!
Today it is easy to say that. The problem is when you are inside the situation with partial information about what the real intention of the leader is and the leader use as argument the "greater good" statement and you have no other option then to accept it. Or do you believe all Germans in the wwii were insane for believing in hittler? Don't you think they just followed the greater good?
That is the problem with the greater good... It can be used by both sides if it is just a vague idea.
Besides that... The history is always told by those who won the war. We will never know the other side version...
Edtited to complement the idea: people do what they believe it is right in that moment. There are bad believes... Bad ideas... Bad leaders... Mistaken people following the wrong "greater good".
I don't want to get into a big debate about this, but as a matter of fact I do think the German people went insane, in a manner of speaking. I suggest you read "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William Shirer. By the time you get to the end of the book, you may very well agree with me. Just saying.
