I want to point out that we can't be sure Renard is good. We know he has his own agenda. The only hard evidence we have that he's on nick's side is that he gave the key back. However, Renard at one point said something like 'if my brother gets the key, what do you think he'll do with us...' when talking to Adalind. That seems to mean, if Eric gets the key he would have no use for the captain anymore and likely kill him. Also, if the captain keeps the key and someone finds that out, the captain becomes a huge target... remember, without the other six keys, they are next to useless. this way the captain knows where the key is without having the danger of keeping it himself. Furthermore, In giving the key back he not only can make peace with nick but draws nick closer than ever and gains a degree of trust.
Now I'm not saying Renard is bad, just saying we don't know either way.
