I feel they felt an almost sacred obligation to pass the keys down through the generations to preserve them within their families as much as was possible to do. There is a single surviving page from a Grimm diary that's hidden in a secret place in Aunt Marie's trailer that may say something about this. (It's why I think Nick's people could possibly trace their roots back to one of these original grimm knights.) It suits the magical aspects of Grimm and lends a sense of romance to the background story.
Of course, if the writers are not in a whimsical mood, they may decide to reveal its identity along more practical lines, in which case I'll be disappointed in the extreme.
As I have said before, we, humans have the power to destroy our world between 11 and 100 times (estimates vary by who is giving them and how much they want to scare people) with nukes. We can destroy local populations with chemical, neurological or biological weapons. Our media already practices mind control to a high degree while pretending innocence of the NLP and subliminal techniques they use (honestly, educating yourself in these techniques so you recognize them is the only defense against them). We of the tech savvy world even allow ourselves to be tracked and monitored through our electronic devices, look at the meta data debates. I would like to know, what can really top that?
If I had something important to say, I would have mumbled it.
