Hollywood types including writers find themselves in the office or on the set for 12 to 16 hours a day. They have no time left for a partner. That is why relationships/marriages in that town are fast, passionate, and short. I would guess not being in the middle of it and having lost any friends who disappeared in that direction (I was born and raised in the Central San Joaquin valley.) over the years, that most of them harbor deep seeded grudges against the opposite sex for not understanding them, when they have not really looked at the lack of their own commitment outside of their industry.
In that case, I can see why so many romantic relationships in popular entertainment these days feel shallow and insincere. Tenderness is a tough thing to sell on-screen without looking schmaltzy, and it doesn't help if the people writing the stories live in a hard-ass environment that's as void of love as you can get.
