I think that is interesting. Yes it would not be essential to have Nick as main character. Another character could be the focal point if the writer's had it in mind. I like that you find Renard more interesting than Nick. I think Nick is becoming more "Renard-like" and Renard is showing what looks like a "Nick" side. Together they are much more interesting than apart.
