I would theorize that it acted on his subconscious wish that the past day or so with all it's deaths and destruction had never happened. Which, if you think about it, would make that staff a pretty dangerous thing to be carrying around with you everywhere you go.
I don’t know how anyone could ever get the idea that Nick made a conscious decision, when we clearly see him go towards Adalind with the staff as if he’s going to try and rivive her, then the portal opens from out of nowhere dragging him through while he and Trubel figth with every inch the both have for Bick not to be dragged through, then he comes through the other side totally shocked everybody is alive again.
Opinions like this is clearly why the writers feel the need to have a post mortum interviews explaining things.
Nick did not "go to Adalind as if he's going to "try and revive her". While he and the grimms killed Z, Nick states he did nothing for his friends. He went to Adalind, threw the stick down, and removed the ring. Diana comes out, and questioned him about the two grimms. He looked strange and then it dawns on him. He said he could bring them (his friends) back to life. At that moment, Z disintegrated, a portal opened, Nick pointed the staff at it and went into the portal. He and Eve returned back home. In the background, Diana is telling Adalind that she brought back Nick for her. Z didn't come back this time and Adalind is sans her ring.
I think you need to watch the episode.
