It is pretty clear Nick was not a normal cop, hanging out with other cops and socializing, the question becomes is that because Nick was a boyscout, simply socially dysfunctional, or perhaps already as dirty as they come?
It goes to your question about if Nick ever could have turned out to be a decent man. We really don't know what he was when the series began. It is rather amazing that Nick was portrayed as dirty cop and murderer without displaying any evolution or devolution via moral conflict, remorse, or flight of conscience.
So the question becomes was he ever a decent man in the first place.
Good points here. If Nick was corrupt before becoming a grimm, who do you think would have protected him?
