If it doesn't prevent her & the children leaving, doesn't prevent Adalind being with Nick, then it's just a nice piece of jewelry Conrad used to con Adalind into submission. She may invest a lot of time and energy figuring that out, but in the meantime, it doesn’t prevent her from doing anything.
I think that's what it is to Adalind now, in addition to Conrad's threat that removing it would hurt the children.
The purpose of the ring was probably to persuade Adalind to continue with the charade of being Sean's happy, loving wife and the mother of his "children." Conrad probably figured on being the one to keep Adalind intimidated on a regular basis with threats to the children, because he was far too arrogant to consider the possibility that he might get killed and not be able to keep doing it. Maybe it couldn't really do anything except tell Conrad where Adalind was and that she still had it on.
If you see what looks like a bomb on a subway people will treat it like bomb and real people can get hurt from the reaction so it is not just a symbol. Similarity, Conrad is likely to be able to create the type of curse he threatened so how is Adalind suppose to know if it fake or not.
Anything that appears and float onto Adalind's finger and a threat not to take it off because if she does her children will suffer greatly, I think it is more than a symbol or ideal threat.....I do not think Conrad give threats and does not keep them
