In seasons 1-3 the only time he seemed to display much emotion was when he told Nick about his family's rejection, the attempts by the queen and his half brother to have him and his mother killed and their time in hiding. I suspect that his greatest thirst was really for revenge, to the extent that he was even willing to side with the resistance, knowing that if they could they would destroy the royals and leave nothing behind that would be worth the effort for him to try to take over.
He did have that one brush with greatness driven by the coin, but I felt like Renard resisting the allure of the coin was a reflection of who he is deep down. Just like when he was obsessed with Juliette and possessed by Jack the Ripper. Renard seems to have a strong inner drive to do the right thing and pushes back against anyone or anything that tries to manipulate him.
I imagine it will be the same with BC.
For now he is probably just bidding his time...
