As we saw with Rolek Porter, when grimms near the end of life and have no grimms in the family to pass a legacy to, they seek out grimms from other families to be the receivers (this suggests, btw, that grimm powers don't skip generations and emerge spontaneously in children who didn't have a grimm parent).
There's really not a whole lot of puffery in the grimm books. They mostly read like pretty straightforward texts on how to recognize wesen, what powers known wesen have and how to kill them. Or in some cases, a warning to just run like hell. That's probably why Kelly wrote the believe-it-or-not account of how his father dispatched Z in the family tree book rather than in one of the other books that Nick had been adding to.
