Renard seemed to think that the way to do this was to isolate Nick from other influences (killing Marie, slipping Hank a zaubertrank). Does that mean that Renard and Mia were really on the same side by keeping Nick from other influences?

I think Mia thought that she could win Renard over to her family by "helping" him isolate Nick. But from what Renard said to her at her plane when she was leaving, he appeared to see what she was doing as the opposite of helping him.

His intention was to obtain the key, he also told Adalind that the way to reach a " Grimm" was through his friends.
I think mentioned: attacking them.

I do remember Marie ever telling Nick about the key.

Hello, McFly? The reason Monroe came into the cross hairs of the royals was due to Sean Renard's big mouth bragging about having a Grimm under his domain/control. In reality, this was just another one of his wishful delusional thinking. My way of saying, Sean believed in his own BS. He never had control of Nick or any other Grimm. But his bragging was believed, combined with the Portland Wesen rumor mill of Monroe and co. befriending a Grimm in said city, hence, the connection to the royals wanting to take out Monroe.
On the other point of why Sean ending up in Portland, probably one of the most furthest city in the USA, from Vienna. He probably left the love of his life, if he ever had one, behind, was due to, Sean and his mommy Elizabeth were being persecuted by the queen, since he was a product of the king's infidelity.

If Nick didn't have anyone to explain what was happening to him, it would make it easier for Renard to "guide" Nick to where he wanted him to end up. And at the time he sent Adalind in to kill Marie, he had no knowledge of Nick's new acquaintance with Monroe.

LOL https://youtu.be/Nsd42PFyoo0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsd42PFyoo0 Shhhhh.... She gave him the key and told him to guard it with his life. I think it was his mom whom explained to him about how the rest of the 6 keys functioned.
