The problem is, while many many people in the United States play soccer/football in school or just for fun, very few follow soccer in America primarily as a source of entertainment. Hell, I've met many more Americans who follow Manchester United or Bayern Munich than their local city teams. If soccer/football is viewed as entertainment, it makes sense to use "football." However, sadly, that's still a very very small minority in the United States, but it is growing.it's grown a lot in my lifetime from there being virtually 0 television coverage when i was a a kid to now having as many as 3 MLS and 5 EPL games on national television over a weekend and nearly 70,000 fans at an early reoun US gold cup game in Seattle a month and a half ago... the sport is indeed growing. However, you are right, compared to the others (Football, Baseball, Basketball, even Hockey my favorite sport) it is still small potatoes in the USA.
