Personally I believe prophecies are tools used by GOD to send us valuable messages.
But I also believe that bad people use prophecies as a way to deceive other people.
This way I think the real question should be: How to separate true prophecies (from GOD) from false ones (from man)?
Before you return the question, I don't know the answer for this question. That is one of the reasons I don't trust modern prophecies.
I'm not going to return a question, just type some additional thoughts. I was thinking about Fatima, and according to what I've read, the secrets communicated there are considered prophecies. My issues with prophecies is that they are vague, and they generally do not contain a specific time or date in order to come to fruition. I also have never understood why God or in the case of Fatima, the Virgin Mary would work through young people or children to get a serious message like a vision of hell across. Last, but not least, I'm not a believer that God works through prophecies. I really do think they are a man made vehicle because the future is an unknown and so, can be portrayed as terrifying.
