So in the end I have to wonder if Grimms are simply overrated. In another thread I believe it was MANTItotheCore and I (maybe the ever awesome JellyFish too) were wondering how much mythos and how much is a result of the effect of a real scenario of playing telephone verses what Grimms really do.
Here is the reality, Meisner was 100% human, highly trained and all that, but more his favorite weapon was his fists and yet he was able to take out wesen with ease and he was able to subdue Truble(for those that don't know, subduing an attacker generally requires a much higher level of skill than simply pounding the tar out of them or killing them). And it seems Kenneth was merely human and yet he was able to hang with Renard (who we know can hang with Nick) and give Nick some trouble, to the point that Nick stacked the deck in his favor with a concealed weapon. Then we get to Hank, Hank has been able to fight wesen effectively. In addition, once the wesen got use to the idea that Nick was a Grimm the did not seem afraid of him.
The more I think on it, the more it seems that Grimm's ran one heck of a PR campaign. Grimms can see woged wesen from long range but wesen can only detect a Grimm at close range. My guess is the initial shock of seeing a Grimm is all the opening a Grimm needs to finish the fight, It only take a fraction of second of freezing in a real fight to lose the fight. My guess is, right there is one of the big secrets to the Grimm's success. They know what they are going up against and can identify it, but their target does not have the same advantage. The shock factor, gives them the split second they need to take the upperhand.
Moreover, it seems that the Grimm's are more ambush/opportunistic killers, aka as in the classic slaying the vampire in its coffin by day when it must sleep verses a head on confrontation.
When you take it all together I am just not seeing Grimms as ultimate badasses, anymore than a mafia contract killer is one. They just seem to lay the groundwork so they have the upperhand (Think of Nick making sure Kenneth was unarmed by Wu before he engaged him and all the time carrying a concealed weapon in case Kenneth was winning).
It seems to me Grimms are simply akin to the Japanese Ninja, great PR artists with some abilities but most of the fear evokes from them striking from the shadows in ambush, using the terrain etc and far less for their actual fighting abilities.
