Nick can't guard everyone at all times. And as you said, he can't lock up those he loves either, that's not a way to live. He has a choice to leave it all behind like his mother did. His aunt told him to leave Juliette but he didn't. Then his mother returns and she tells him not to let go of the people he loves because she did and it left her with a lifetime of regrets. Nick is very vulnerable because of Kelly. We've already seen that but we've already seen that he's more for staying than leaving. He may regret it later on we don't know.
Grimms are loners but that hasn't stopped them from having (family) lives outside of their job as hunters. It's not easy and may not even be standard procedure but it is doable whether it's the passive way like Josh and his father's or its the proactive way like Marie, Kelly and their father who trained them young. So far Nick has done things his own way but perhaps they will be a straw that finally breaks the back and forces him to embrace the loner/traveller life of a hunter and leave his family behind, who knows.
