It makes sense if you think about it. Command officers in gold should be strategically more valuable targets than redshirted cannon fodder. If I was shooting at a Starfleet landing party, I'd definitely be aiming for the goldshirts.
I wonder if that had anything to do with red and gold being switched in TNG...
Speaking of TNG, over the New Year weekend I rewatched a few episodes, and it might just be me, but TNG seems a lot more "dated" on rewatch than TOS, even with TOS' short women's uniforms and obvious 60s gender roles. Wondering if you've watched any lately and if so how they seem to you.
