It was completely out of line for Nick to make such a remark, so it makes no more sense for him to do that than to waltz in amongst accolades either. However, I never took the remark as Nick holding something he could use against Renard whenever he wanted. Nick (as Renard) made a remark in his speech about the team's exemplary service. I took Nick's remark as a throwback to that and nothing more. While Nick was never a well developed character, if he made a threat it was a threat and perceived as such. Renard wasn't threatened as he was already dealing with another yet intelligent and thought provoking storyarc, that of Meisner the ghost.
