I have already explained why stopping Renard was crucial. And if I don't remember wrong, Renard wanted to see Nick dead. The order was: "shoot to kill".
Stopping Renard was not crucial. He was running for mayor, not a powerful position of authority.
So why do you think BC wanted Renard as the mayor? Do you deny the end of season 5 / start of season 6? One can dispute the realism of this, but it was the storyline. In addition, it was crucial for Nick, who Renard wanted to kill. Had Renard become Mayor, it would be much harder for Nick to stop Renard and save Kelly and Adalind.
