I think Monroe probably knew bits and pieces but I see him as more of a loner than someone who makes a habit of learning more about the various species of wesen. But the series had to make his presence attractive to Nick somehow and tidbits of knowledge would be the only way he'd get Nick's attention.
I wonder how the various species of wesen viewed him. We know some were outright opposed to his upcoming marriage to Rosalee, although I find it somewhat hypocritical that they could care less if he lived with her. It had to be out in the news that he was a pal to the grimm. It seems to me that would anger them more than any marriage to Rosalee. In addition, at least according to the arguments I've seen, supposedly these grimm are akin to the boogeyman in our culture.
So what kind of a wesen decides to pal around with their version of the boogeyman?

The best way to frustrate a cyberbully is to ignore him.
