The books were handed down through generations of Kesslers. There's no way of knowing how many Rolek Porter incidents, in which books of one family are handed over to another family, may have happened over the centuries, and no way of knowing whether someone who made an entry into a Kessler book was an actual direct ancestor or a member of another branch of the Kessler family. The Nebojsa pages in the family tree book had at least four or five branches that dead-ended; there's no telling how many the Kessler family had.
Nick referred to the people who wrote in the books as his ancestors, but the accuracy of that was probably questionable; it's not as if he had any way of knowing for sure who begat whom before they found the family tree book.
