I imagine some people who are recovering addicts live in fear of relapsing so they work harder to stay clean. There's nothing wrong with that kind of fear. Adalind assumed she wouldn’t be able to have control but clearly she underestimated her desire to change for the better overwhelming her capacity to relapse into old destructive behaviours.
It's true Adalind was at her worst when she was human. she defined herself by the wesen powers that were stripped from her. After Diana, there was a fundamental shift that saw her move away from the tenet her mother instilled in her about who she was as an individual because of her abilities. She found her sense of self worth in loving her kids.
The fear she had was that she'd be reduced to the old Adalind entrapped in a cycle of destructive power/chasing after those with power regardless of the destruction they left in their wake. S1-S3 Adalind didn't care who she hurt as long as she got what benefitted her selfish wants. This only changed when she realised she did in fact love and want Diana and later baby Kelly and Nick and the life they created together in the loft.
Adalind didn't cast any spell over herself or others that we didn't see on screen.
