Robyn, she told Nick over dinner in episode 5x04 that she was talking to a former college and he mentioned a job proposal at her old firm. She then told Nick she was planning on going back to work eventually beacuse she can't just relay on him. It was hinted at from the very start of season 5 that Adalind was going back to work , there was nothing sudden about her going back for me. I respectfully don't think she was as dependent as you think, she had a lot going on with looking after Kelly and yes she could have done a bit more to find Diana but where would she even start ,She thought the Royals had Diania.
The Royals compensated Adalind by buying her clothes and giving her a place to stay but except for when she was working for Eric they never paid her. The only reason they probably even bought her clothes is so so would look presentable to be seen with Royals as high borns dress a certain way. That's why she was so poor and had to relay on Renard in late season 3 after Diania was taken. There's even a deleted scene of her stealing money out of Renards wallet she's that broke in season 3. So at least when she was living with Nick she wanted to go back to work and make her own money and she also told Nick she didn't want him paying her clothes, she said she would feel awkward using his money.
I fully agree the way Nick treated Adalind in late season 5 felt contrived considering she hadn't given him a single reason for him to have such mistrust And lack of interest in her. You have to Remember but Robyn ,Adalind has done a lot more to ruin his life than he ever done on her. In fact the only heinous act he committed against Adalind was participating in the kidnapping which was terrible, one of the worst on the show IMO ,but the baby's father was also involved plus at the time the way he thought of Adalind he might have thought she was a danger to the child. I am by the way in no way defending the kidnapping which I thought was just one of the most atrocious acts on the show ,but I'm just given my perspective of way Nick would be more cautious than Adalind. I think Adalind realized he would be more cautious beacuse of her past with him and decided just go with it beacuse she was already clearly attached to him and enjoyed being with him.
I just rewatched the kiss scene in 5x07 she stoped the kiss and said they should take things slow but she's also the one who leaned forward first to start the kiss. She also acted like a teenage girl with a crush when trouble asked if she loved Nick, so I don't see Adalinds compulsion to be with Nick as sudden as you do.
Though I do agree if Renard had of looked after her and Diania like nick did with her and Kelly she may have fell in love with him like she did Nick.
I also fully admit I may have a bit of a bias since Nick and Adalind are my favorite characters but when judging characters and their motivations I try to be as neutral as possible.
