Welll....actually he's more powerful than that. My upbringing taught me that Satan is after a person's soul. Once he has that, he has control. But there's also the thought that a person can sell their soul to the devil in exchange for wealth, power, etc.

I saw the explanation too, and it's one I hadn't thought of and while I thought it was plausible, I had doubts about it. Maybe he was just mocking them, but a combination of the two might be the thing.
