When BC killed a suspect in lockup, Renard told them the precinct had been compromised and they should deal with anything involving BC on the outside. When Nick first found out about HW he kept them at arm's length and Renard was in the loop. And then Renard went BC, which meant there was now nobody in the precinct other than Hank and Wu who could be trusted. That pushed them further toward HW. What finally brought Nick all in on HW was Hank getting taken and discovering that the entire North Precinct was BC Wesen.
I wasn't a fan of the BC/HW arc, but the way they wrote it, there was no way Nick could not end up where he did with HW.
