Well, if you think back to the S1 episode "Cat and Mouse" they linked that all together back then. The character of Ian Harmon told Nick, Monroe and Rosalee that the Royals were behind all kinds of sh&^ going on all around the world. Including some terrorist organizations.
However, like you I think the Royals were a perfectly good villainous bunch. Don't know why the show writers felt the need to take them off the board and bring in Black Claw as a replacement.
And turning Renard into the new big bad would have made a lot more sense if he was connected with the Royals. i.e. After the death of King Freddie, he decides to get some serious payback AND usurp the throne.
