I suspect (and that is all it is, rampant speculation on my part) that in the good ol' days many of think of as the immediate post WWI and WWII periods, that a lot of the marriages were societal pressure type of arrangements rather than based on romantic love. In other words a lot of people were marrying for the sake of societal convention, which was marriage and family. And yet out of that came a lot of children who completed school, entered the workforce and were remarkably stable. So, anecdotally it seems to have worked for society as a whole, on an individual level, maybe a different story, which may be why the "me" generation was viewed with such relative disdain.
