From what Renard told Nick, "they" would most likely have been the royals sending the verrat. I don't think we ever saw anyone other than grimms and royals who knew anything about the keys. In the absence of some history within the royal families that said they'd managed to get a key away from a Kessler, they'd naturally assume that Marie was the most likely keyholder and that she'd pass it to Nick, since they believed Nick's mom to be dead.
Lol. I see why viewers were so disgusted with the whole history of the keys. I assumed there was some dialogue to support how the key came into Marie's hands, but when I couldn't find it, more questions popped into mind, like, why did Renard hire Adalind to go after it?
