At some point Erik got his hands on Nick in S2. Renard wanted the Grimm to work FOR him (probably similarly to the old days of Grimms being subservient to Royals) but in the end, he settled for one that worked beside him because he had no control over Nick. They worked as allies until Renard turned coat with BC and found himself on the outs altogether after that.
Throughout the show, as a Grimm, Nick worked independently except when it came to his job as a police officer and even that relationship was stretched to breaking point from S5 onwards. The only reason Nick didn't complete leave Renard on the outside was Diana when Zestoerer showed up.
Just compare Adalind working for Renard to note how vastly different Nick's relationship to Renard is. At no point on this show did Renard exact his authority as a royal prince over Nick outside of their police work. And even that's a stretch because Renard always allowed Nick to do his job freely whether it was arresting them or killing them as a Grimm. He could not even use the incriminating evidence against Nick for the same because he was in the same boat with his own murders which he escaped being imprisoned for.
So if by recruited you mean Nick worked side by side with Renard, I'd sure he stayed recruited but that was never Renard ultimate goal back in S1.
Renard had total control over Nick. He could rid himself of Nick whenever he wanted. He was the one who fired Nick. The scoobies were the ones that put together a plan to get Nick back on the force. The plan worked and Nick was back on the job. However, Renard threatened him if he ever went against Renard again. If Nick were so in control, he would have told Renard point blank that he had no control. Nick did not argue back. He did as he was told. R
Renard had plenty of irons in the fire and hired guns to handle his various interests. Nick was just one of the irons in the fire. Nick wanted to be a Grimm and the only way for him to do that was to do as he was told.
The best way to frustrate a cyberbully is to ignore him.
