Z clearly had power, but power and intelligence are not the same thing. If you have enough power to stomp on anyone who doesn't run away from you, you don't have to be especially smart.
If we presume that the markings on the cloth the seven grimms buried with the stick were a warning about Z, that means that he either once lived in our world and was banished to the other place, or made a previous attempt to cross over and was repelled (otherwise, how would anyone know to mark up a piece of cloth about his possible return). And in the 800+ years that passed between the Fourth Crusade and S06, there was never any sign that he managed to return. So was whoever banished or repelled him more powerful than him, or just smarter?
