Adalind was fine as a villain who popped in from time to time but it was obvious when the writers started this magical baby thing way back when that they had no idea of what to do with her character.
As for Juliette, she never was promoted to anything more than Nick's squeeze.
Now they have another baby on the show and we're dealing with Adalind and Juliette who are still weighing down the story with diva drama. No one should be surprised that their stories are as boring as the characters are. I am trying to tolerate Juliette to some extent because there is an uprising and she's some kind of weapon, supposedly. But really, if they'd have left her dead, I would not have minded in the least.
The two women aren't metaphors for anything but useless dramas that add nothing to the overall progress of the storyline.
Within the context of good storytelling, I would disagree with you, irukandji, about Juliette/Eve and Adalind. However, based on the first six episodes of season 5 with Eve’s not so surprising unveiling, and Adalind’s descent to mousy & pathetic, I’m not convinced of good storytelling.
To me, the Wesen Uprising arc is hardly more than a Wesen of the Week story that spans multiple episodes. It requires a beginning, a climax, and a conclusion -- hopefully told in a succinct and interesting style.
The characters’ stories however, requires much more attention to previously established traits and future evolution. That’s the part the writers seem to not want to devote their’s or the show’s time.
Which is fine if the Wesen of the Week is the priority. It’s just difficult to invest time and emotions in characters that are used as backdrop to the Wesen of the Week story.
Had Greenwalt & Kouf respected their audience’s involvement & commitment to the show & characters, instead of their repeated & adamant response of Juliette is absolutely dead they might have said tune in for season 5 because we’ll begin answering your questions in the first episode.
Then, viewers could have witnessed over the first 6 episodes that while:
Nick grieves over Juliette & his Mother, and Adalind grieves over losing her daughter yet again, and Nick & Adalind deal with the birth of their son & tentatively transition from hated enemies to allies with a common goal, Juliette, who was secreted away to some government compound, is being systematically & forcefully molded into a super weapon by Meisner/HW.
Assuming each episode of season 5 spans 72 hours, this would allow viewers to compare & consider the similarities & differences between the three character evolutions and watch Juliette transition into Eve over a course of 18 days or so. Personally, I would prefer for Nick to become aware of Juliette/Eve later in the season so that Nick, Adalind & Juliette/Eve were more entrenched in their new ‘roles’.
I’d much rather have seen the Eve plotline evolve.
Juliette giving up a little more of her former self/life each day until she gives up completely and lets Eve take over, partly because she can’t continue to fight against Meisner & a supposed Hexenbiest-proof cell and partly because it’s easier to let go of emotions that remind her of so much heartache.
Nick & Adalind struggling with their forced arrangement, determined to get along, each sometimes worrying he/she isn’t trying hard enough, sometimes worrying they’re getting along too well, and me knowing that as soon as they find the right niche where each one is comfortable with their level of ‘getting along’, Eve is going to show up and likely take them back to square one. And, to also question if Eve’s conditioning will hold once she’s exposed to this new & unexpected Nick/Adalind/baby scenario and I’ll begin to see brief glimpses of Juliette bubbling to the surface.
Not saying I wanted the Juliette/Eve or the Nick & Adalind have a baby arc. Just saying that since we're getting that, I like to witness more of the character evolution.
