In "By Any Other Name," Scotty comes up with a plan to flood the engines with positive energy, which he says will destroy the ship when it comes into contact with the barrier's negative energy. So by that point, they have come up with a concept for negative energy that has it reacting with positive energy the same way antimatter reacts with matter. Whatever.
Light is energy. If they could see the barrier, the sensors should have detected energy in the visible wavelengths range. So a small scientist groan there.
Yes, I think we've wrung just about everything we can out of this episode. Quite a lot, in fact, when you consider that it's one we both liked. We should probably not bother to pick at episodes we didn't like, there's no real challenge there. Maybe "Balance of Terror" next, or "Space Seed?"
