David Alexander was the one who stated that Gene could not fire his leading man because of this free agent business. Gene never actually said he fired Hunter. Shatner said Hunter was fired, but he does not attribute that to Gene. He could be talking about when Katz fired Hunter.
Regarding the City on the Edge of Forever, Roddenberry did misrepresent Scott once as being the drug dealer. It was actually a crewman named Beckwith, who is also a murderer. Ellison had a vision of an alternate savage earth as the result of Beckwith's entry into time. In addition, Kirk is selfish and attempts to save Edith anyway. It's Spock who prevents her from dying. There were a number of rewrites to the script from a few screenwriters, including Ellison's. What resulted was the best episode of Star Trek ever written. There was none better in my opinion. I applaud Gene on this one. Episodes like The Enemy Within and Metamorphosis, among others, could have stood many pairs of eyes looking at them.
I started to say that I thought Hunter's departure was a blow to the series, but then I was thinking of all of the problems he and his Mrs. caused. All of the visits, tantrums, discussions and rewritten contracts would have cost Desilu some big bucks.
Roddenberry had a fling with many women, including Grace Lee Whitney.
