I think cats and dogs do show affection to their owners. Purring is a sign of affection, although cats can purr if injured or frightened. We've been told that dogs wag their tails as a sign of affection. But I've seen dogs wag their tails and growl viciously, so I guess the best is to go with intuition and not necessarily what you see. I don't really see Cochrane as being similar to a feral cat. I think he probably was terrified when the Companion nabbed him, but there is something about the Companion that may have made his transition to pet easier. I think the Companion has played kidnapping card before, perhaps many times and even with humans.
