Once he had clued into the fact that the hexenbiest nurse who had tried to kill his aunt was Renard's GF/minion, he probably started looking for ulterior motives in just about everything Renard ever told him. And by the end of s05, you could tell by the tone of their conversations that he no longer felt anything even remotely resembling respect or trust for the man.
Mentor isn't really the right word for Renard and Nick's relationship. Renard really wasn't a mentor in the sense because Nick wasn't looking up to him for guidance. Instead, I see him as more of a manager, handling the resources he has. Perhaps in Nick's case, handler would be the better term for their relationship. We tend to think that Renard only has dealings with Nick and Hank, but in fact, he would be directing a team, of which Nick, Hank and Wu are just a part. Renard doesn't need Nick's respect or his trust. Nick knows that. All Nick really needs in this relationship is his paycheck and to be a Grimm. He'll continue to do as he's told because Renard has the control.

Kelly appeared to be certain that if Renard and Adalind tried to keep Diana it would end with both of them dead and Diana in the hands of the royals. So I expect she would have taken Diana whether Renard cooperated or not.
Which means Kelly didn't give a rat's behind if Renard and Adalind were killed. It was only Diana she was concerned about.
