And although the darker stories in Deep Space Nine go against some of Roddenberry's vision of a brighter, more hopeful future, I think that, ultimately, even utopias should have a bit of grit about them. See also: Benjamin Sisko, Elim Garak, and Kira Nerys. (I'm also fond of Julian Bashir, but shhh, don't tell anyone I said so. How they managed to make him into a very interesting character was just fantastic.)
Yes, I am also a big B5/DS9 fan, even though, yes, DS9 may have been a bit of a rip off of B5.
I think the Star Trek universe needed a little grit at the time. I wonder if they may have put more grit in their next TV incarnation even if B5 hadn't existed,
I do wish that there could be a new Star Trek Universe TV incarnation. I mean the two rebooted movies have been great, why not a TV version!
I agree completely on the grit, the moment DS9 ditched the alien of the week visiting the station to the Gamma quadrant politicking, the show grew teeth. The problem with the whole Roddenberry ethos of a brighter future always felt antiseptic and cold. But when Sisko and band started to have to make realistic compromises to protect the alpha quadrant from an unrelenting enemy then we caught glimpses of a truer feeling portrayal of humanity in space. One episode that sticks in my mind is the episode where Sisko fdes a vidlog to camera and discusses the outright lies, deceptions and dirty tricks he used to bring the Romulan's into the war. He of course erases it at the end but you come to understand what Sisko is willing to do and sacrifice to protect his people and the federation he loves.
And as to a new TV show, YES PLEASE!!! Star Trek is best in the week to week episodic format, I like the movies but I want more Trek

Doctor: You betrayed me … betrayed my trust. You betrayed our friendship, you betrayed everything that I’ve ever stood for. You let me down!
Clara: Then why are you helping me?
Doctor: Why? Do you think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?
