Nick was one of his sources. Even after getting information on them, he never decided to go out and join forces. It was BC who approached him. Rachel herself was part of BC and never divulged it to Renard. Instead when she brought Lucien to his house, Renard guessed that they were BC.Renard's knowledge of BC was secondhand intel from Nick and whatever BC chose to tell him. He might have assumed Lucien was also a BC member, but he didn't know who the players were or the hierarchy until after he was completely inside.
I understand what you're saying with regard to Renard planning ahead and having some kind of an exit planned. But this was a completely different situation for him because BC brought Diana into the picture. Diana wanted Renard, but she also wanted Adalind, desperately. Renard was never going to be able to plan any kind of strategy around that and I think he really wanted Diana back as well.
Despite repeatedly dragging his feet, Renard proved he wanted to be mayor. But he never once confirmed he was BC. And as they were the ones exercising control over him and Adalind in order to get to Diana, it's apparent they didn't consider him a fully vested BC member either.
I would have preferred your version of Renard in S5, but I didn’t get that impression. Renard probably assumed he’d be top dog, at least in Portland, but once meeting Bonaparte he quickly realized he’d met his match and wasn’t equipped to challenge him. Renard was further thrown off his game realizing he no long had any control over Adalind. For the first time, he was trapped and completely on his own.
I agree but Renard was terrified of Bonaparte for good reason, Boneparte was ten times more powerful than Renard. In fact I feel even Renards mother wouldn’t even be a match for Bonaparte. Henrietta seemed to be on par with Renards mother and she was terrified of Juliettes powers, Juliette who Bonaparte defeated in 5x22.
